High Chair Safety Tips
High chair safety became
an issue with the Consumer Product Safety Commission when the
number of children injured or even killed when falling out of a
high chair increased. The standards have been set over the past
two decades, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be totally
involved in the process.
To keep this short and sweet we offer five tips designed to
keep your child safe in his or her high chair. They may seem
like common sense, but if everybody followed them there would
not be the number of injuries that occur every year. And even
if these high chair safety tips are nothing more than common
sense, it never hurts to have a little reminder.
1) Look for a high chair that has a wide base. People can be
distracted or even clumsy and easily bump into a high chair. A
wide base will keep the chair from tipping or falling over in
case of an accidental bump.
2) Folding high chairs are great, but if you have one always
be sure the device that locks it into place is secure. High
chairs have injured children by folding up with the child still
in it.
3) We can't stress this one enough, but always strap your
child into his high chair. If your high chair does not come
with a strap, there are plenty on the market that you can
attach and use. The best straps go between the legs and over
the shoulders as well. If these seem like a lot of work, they
are. But the extra safety is worth it. And once it becomes part
of your routine, you child will just accept it as being a part
of sitting down to eat and will not fuss every time the straps
are applied.
4) Perhaps the most obvious of all is never let your child
stand in his high chair. And to make sure that never happens,
do not, for any reason, leave your child in his or her high
chair without being attended. Not even for a few seconds. It
only takes a few seconds for an accident to happen.
5) Finally, avoid placing your high chair near a counter or
table. Children have been injured by pushing against the table
and tipping the chair over. A good wide tray on the high chair
will also help prevent this from happening.
There you have 5 simple high chair safety tips. It may sound
cliche but by simply following these tips you can prevent your
child from becoming another accident statistic.
