Are Wooden High Chairs As Good As Plastic?

For years, it was generally accepted that although wooden high chairs looked great, they simply weren't as functional or as durable as plastic ones. That is simply not the case any longer.

Still, wooden high chairs can be beautiful. They are not just a high chair, but a piece of furniture. They are not something you'll want to hide away if you have company coming for a formal dinner. In many cases, they become family heirlooms.

And manufacturers are starting to make not just looks but comfort and safety a priority. For instance now many come with seat cushions. Now your baby can enjoy his or her meal in comfort.

One drawback that you must consider though is that there is no reclining feature on wooden high chairs. Obviously this makes them impractical for infants until they can sit up by themselves. Until that time, you'll just need to come up with another way of feeding your baby.

OK, so let's talk features. Some wooden high chairs now come with dishwasher safe removable trays. This makes cleaning a breeze. Most will not come with casters. If yours does, make sure they lock to keep it from rolling away. If it does not have casters, the leg bottoms should have non skid covers.

We already mentioned padded seats. If your high chair does not have a cushion, get one. They are not that expensive and you want your baby to be comfortable at meal time.

Please look for one that has some form of safety restraint. Way to many babies are injured every year from falling out of a high chair. Some are killed. And even with a safety restraint you'll want to be sure never to leave your child in his high chair alone. If you are leaving the room for any reason, make sure you take him out of the chair first.
